Step Off the Hamster Wheel: Why Dentists and Dental Teams Need to Pause
Dentistry is busy. We are busy being busy.
There is always another patient to see, more notes to write, more radiographs to report on, more compliance to complete, another course to attend, a new technique that promises to be the magic wand to change everything.
And when the workday ends? We step off the professional hamster wheel only to jump straight onto the personal one — family commitments, meals to prepare, gym sessions, parents’ evenings, caring responsibilities. Collapse, sleep, repeat.
Does this sound familiar?
Are you one of the thousands of dentists who quietly think, “I want it to be different”?
If so, here is a truth:
👉 Do what you have always done, and you will get what you have always got.
👉 If you want your future to be different from your past, you need to do something differently.
Step One: Stop and Evaluate Honestly
The first step is to stop. Step off the wheel.
Take an honest look at where you are right now. Not catastrophising, not downplaying — just a truthful assessment of your reality. This is your starting point.
Many people avoid this step because it feels uncomfortable, but clarity begins with honesty. Without knowing where you are, you cannot decide where to go.
Step Two: Set Your GPS
Once you know your starting point, define your destination. Be clear about what you want instead.
Ask yourself:
- What really matters to me?
- What do I want to be remembered for?
- What is my legacy?
Set your targets — short, medium, and long term.
Step Three: Choose Your Route
Like a car journey, once you know your starting place and your destination, you can plan your route.
It won’t be a straight line. You’ll need the right vehicle for the terrain, fuel and resources along the way, and regular servicing to keep going. The same applies to your life and career.
Tools to Support You
If you don’t know where to begin, we have self-evaluation tools that can guide you in taking stock of your starting point. You can find them here: Self-Evaluation Tools
For some people, even using these tools can feel tough or overwhelming. That’s why coaching exists. Coaching provides a safe, supportive space where you don’t have to face things alone. It’s not about judgement — it’s about clarity, perspective, and creating the steps to move forward.
How to Begin
If you’re ready to step off the hamster wheel, here are three ways you can start:
- Free Call Friday – Coaching Session
A one-hour coaching session designed to help you start overcoming challenges. This is a fully complimentary session available on Fridays (06:00–14:00).
It is a safe and confidential space to think, reflect, and begin moving forward. No sales pitch, no strings attached — just pure coaching.
- Speak with Jane
Think of this like a dental examination — diagnostic, not treatment. In this free 30-minute call, we’ll explore your situation, goals, and needs. Together, we’ll design a plan for moving forward. No coaching is done in this session; instead, we focus on clarity and next steps.
- Paid Coaching
If Fridays don’t suit your schedule, you can book paid sessions at other times — early mornings and some evenings. These sessions can cover any area you want to change: career direction, practice management, patient communication, anxiety, fear, unwanted habits, or personal well-being.
