As a dentist, you understand the importance of precision and attention to detail. The same principles apply in the art of dressmaking, a hobby that I, Jane Lelean, passionately pursue. Dressmaking involves a meticulous process of designing, adjusting, and refining until the perfect garment is created. This method mirrors the approach I take when crafting coaching and training proposals for dental practices. Let me share with you how my passion for dressmaking informs and enhances my coaching process.
The Dressmaking Process
- Starting with the Pattern: The journey begins with the first draft of the pattern. This initial blueprint outlines the design, but it’s just the starting point.
- Amending the Paper Pattern: Before any fabric is cut, the paper pattern undergoes careful amendments. Adjustments are made based on measurements and design preferences, ensuring that the foundation is solid.
- Creating a Calico Toile: Next, I sew the pattern into a calico toile—a prototype made from inexpensive fabric. This step allows me to see how the design translates into reality and identify any necessary adjustments.
- Refining and Adjusting: The calico toile is scrutinised and adjustments are made. These changes are then translated back onto the paper pattern, refining the design to better fit the final vision.
- Finalising the Garment: If significant refinements are needed, a new toile may be created. Once the pattern is perfect, the main fabric is cut, and the final garment is sewn with confidence.

Tailoring Your Coaching and Training
Just as I meticulously create a dress, I craft coaching and training proposals with the same level of care and attention to detail. Here’s how my dressmaking process translates into my approach to coaching:
- Listening and Understanding: Every coaching journey starts with understanding your unique needs and challenges. I listen carefully to your goals, aspirations, and the specific dynamics of your practice.
- Drafting the Initial Proposal: Based on our initial conversations, I draft a preliminary coaching and training plan. This serves as the foundation for our work together but is just the starting point.
- Customising the Plan: The initial proposal undergoes amendments to tailor it specifically to your practice. This may involve refining goals, identifying key areas for development, and ensuring that the plan aligns with your vision.
- Implementing and Observing: We implement the plan and closely observe its impact. This may involve 1-2-1 bespoke coaching, training events, in-house team training, observation days (fly on the wall), thinking pattern analysis, communication skills training, and team-building activities.
- Refining and Adjusting: Just as I refine a toile, I adjust the coaching plan based on feedback and observations. This iterative process ensures that the approach remains aligned with your evolving needs.
- Achieving Your Perfect Practice: With the refined plan in place, we work towards achieving your desired outcomes. The goal is to create a harmonious, efficient, and successful dental practice tailored to your unique requirements.
