From Aches to Excellence: Diagnosing and Treating the Health of Your Practice
Have you ever had one of those weeks where nothing seems to go right? Perhaps equipment is failing, team morale is low, and patient numbers aren’t where they should be. It’s easy to feel despondent, but just like our physical health, the health of a dental practice can fluctuate.
Let’s take a moment to consider health in a way we all understand—our own wellbeing. Picture a timeline of health:
- Fit and well, but not at peak performance – You feel good but know you could be better. Perhaps you’re not as energetic as usual, or you’ve let healthy habits slip.
- Generally fit but with minor ailments – You feel okay, but there are persistent minor issues—aches and pains, a nagging cough, or headaches that you ignore or treat with quick fixes.
- Chronic but manageable illness – You’re carrying a collection of symptoms that slow you down. Some you’re aware of, others you’ve normalised, even though they affect your daily life.
- Seriously unwell and in need of intervention – At this stage, ignoring your health is no longer an option. You need immediate care to prevent things from spiralling further.
Now, let’s apply this same concept to the health of your dental practice. Where does your practice sit on this timeline?
- Generally fit but not at peak performance – Your practice is thriving, but occasional issues arise: team tensions, temporary dips in income, or minor equipment failures.
- Persistent minor problems – The cracks are showing. Maybe your turnover of staff is higher than you’d like, equipment failures are becoming frequent, or complaints are creeping up.
- Chronic issues affecting performance – A combination of issues is starting to take its toll: toxic team dynamics, consistently failing to meet targets, low patient retention, or staff disengagement.
- Critical condition requiring urgent intervention – The warning signs are undeniable: financial struggles, an inability to pay staff, regulatory concerns, or even threats to your ability to continue practising.
A struggling practice never reaches crisis overnight. It progresses through each stage, often with warning signs that are easy to overlook, especially if you are busy, bouncing from task to task with little or no time to stop and catch your breath. Of course if you’ve acquired a struggling practice, you could be unwittingly stepping into stage 3 or 4 of a pre-existing set of challenges.
The good news? Just like your health, your practice’s wellbeing can be improved at any stage. Whether you’re dealing with minor aches or in need of urgent intervention, there’s a path to peak performance.
For over 20 years, I’ve worked with dental professionals to transform their practices, turning challenges into opportunities for growth. Wherever you are on the timeline, you don’t have to navigate this alone.
