Time Is Precious. Learn More in Less Time.
Time is your most precious resource. And understanding yourself—how you think, how you learn, how you communicate—is the most effective tool available to you as a dental professional.
As dentists, we’re professionally committed to continuing education. But what if you could make your learning work better for you? What if you could learn in a way that not only saves time, but also deepens confidence, increases team cohesion, reduces complaints, and improves patient outcomes?
In this article, I’ll introduce you to the four learning styles that shape how you and your team take in and apply new skills. When you know how you learn best—and how your colleagues learn—you can learn more in less time, communicate more effectively, and transform your working day. Understanding your learning style will help you be more selective in choosing your CPD so that you make the most from your time and financial investment.
First, imagine two axes:
- Top to bottom: How You perceive information—from direct experience (top) to abstract concepts (bottom)
- Left to right: How you process information—from active experimentation (left) to reflective observation (right)

This gives us four styles:
- The Imaginers – “Why?”
- Learn best through experience and reflection
- Value emotional engagement and connection
- May struggle with fast-paced or high-pressure settings
- The Thinkers – “What?”
- Love theory, ideas, and structured learning
- Seek recognition and knowledge
- May hesitate to trust their own creativity
- The Doers – “How?”
- Hands-on learners who like to get things done
- Driven by productivity and efficiency
- May forget to involve others or reflect
- The Innovators – “What if?”
- Thrive on change and possibilities
- Motivated by growth and improvement
- Can overlook the detail or consistency
No style is better than another—each has its strengths and blind spots. For true growth, we need to recognise our own preferences, stretch into other styles, and support every team member in their preferred way of learning.
What is your preferred way of learning?
Now you know the 4 ways people learn it will help you invest your training budget wisely saving time and money while improving standards and developing new skills.
Choose Evidence-Based Training That Works
To make training truly effective for everyone in your practice, look for courses that include:
- Reflection time
- Group discussions
- Delivery of tools and techniques
- Opportunities to practise
- Integration and application
- Time for Q&A
- Time for ongoing support
With all these elements you can learn in a way that saves you time, stress and money, developing your team and practice culture in a efficient way.
Now you know the criteria for evidenced based learning, lets look at some of the challenges you may be experiencing day to day.
Does This Sound Familiar?
Many dentists tell us they face challenges like:
- Anxiety, stress, and impostor syndrome
- Fear of complaints or criticism
- Pressure to meet financial targets
- Confusion around NHS/private treatment options
- Feeling short of time or emotionally drained
- Investment in expensive clinical courses that don’t deliver the promises
- Investing in clinical training—but patients still say “no”
We want something different for you:
- Calm, confident communication
- Clearer treatment conversations
- More “yeses” from the right patients
- Stronger relationships with patients and your team
- Better results—and better rewards
I have a mantra that a problem can only be present in the absence of a truth full conversation.
I have been where you are and the cause I experienced those same fears and anxieties I developed patient centred communication-BEST CHOICES. It worked and now I share it with dentists and team members so they can experience the results too.
Why This Matters: The Communication Gap at the Heart of Dentistry
Most of the challenges we face in practice today come down to communication.
- Fear of complaints or criticism
- Pressure to hit targets
- Patients choosing cheaper treatment over better outcomes
- Confusion around treatment plans
- Limited NHS options
- Constant time pressure
- Investing in clinical training… yet patients still saying “no”
At the heart of every one of these issues lies a breakdown in communication—between dentist and patient, between team members, and even within ourselves.
That’s why we created the Patient-Centred Communication – BEST CHOICES programme. It gives you a practical, step-by-step framework you can use to build stronger patient relationships, have more meaningful conversations, and grow your practice in a way that feels authentic and rewarding.
I would like to invite you to join us in Newcastle from 6–8 July for Patient centred communication-BEST CHOICES, so you can say goodbye to fear anxiety and overwhelm and hello to the fulfilling rewarding career
