The House of YOU – A Journey of Self-Discovery
Imagine for a moment that you are a house. What would your foundations look like? Strong and steady, or perhaps a little shaky? What about your windows and doors – are they open and welcoming, or firmly closed? And what’s tucked away in your attic or basement – things you’d rather not look at, or hidden treasures waiting to be found?
That’s the idea behind the House of YOU – a reflective exercise that invites you to explore who you are, what sustains you, and where you’re heading. It’s not about drawing a perfect house. It’s about taking time to look inside yourself with curiosity, not judgement.
The house of YOU may contain
- Foundations – Your Values
- External walls – Your strengths
- Internal walls and floors -What nourishes you
- Windows – Life lessons
- Doors – Career pathway
- Staircase – Your goals and aspirations
- Roof -Your security
- Furniture and decoration-Joy for joys sake
- People in the house – Your purpose
- Attic/basement– What is stored away or hidden
- Neighbours Your influences
- Garden/surroundings – Your environment
- Vermin – What undermines you.
What is the house of YOU like today, what do you want it to be like in 5 years time?
Why This Matters
We all have parts of ourselves that we see clearly, and parts we don’t notice at all. That’s where the Johari Window comes in – a simple framework that helps explain the known and unknown aspects of who we are:
- Open Area: The things you and others both recognise about you.
- Blind Spots: What others see in you, but you don’t see yourself.
- Hidden Area: What you know but keep tucked away.
- Unknown Area: The qualities and potential that no one – not even you – has discovered yet.
By working through your House of YOU alongside the Johari Window, you begin to shine a light into those blind spots and hidden corners. This isn’t always easy, but it can be incredibly freeing and empowering.

Why Work With a Coach?
Of course, you could explore your House of YOU on your own – and I’d encourage you to give it a go. But here’s the thing: when you work with a coach, the exercise takes on a whole new dimension.
- A coach is not there to tell you what to do. A coach is a space creator. Coaching gives you time and space to:
- Think and reflect without interruption.
- Consider and design the future you want.
- Be optimistic and look forward with fresh energy.
- Understand yourself more deeply and express who you truly are.
Your appointment in the diary isn’t just another meeting – it’s time invested in you. Time to breathe, to focus, and to give yourself the attention you so often give to everyone else.
How Coaching Helps
With a coach alongside you, you will:
- Notice patterns you might miss.
- Answer gentle but challenging questions that spark real insight.
- See yourself more clearly through a supportive mirror.
- Discover hidden strengths and learn how to use them.
It’s often in conversation that the biggest breakthroughs happen. What feels confusing or stuck suddenly begins to make sense – and from there, change becomes possible.
