Anxiety in Dentistry: What If It’s Not the Problem, But the Message?
If you are a dentist, clinician, or part of a support team, you will likely recognise this:
- The racing heart before a difficult conversation
- The quiet worry about whether a patient may complain
- The sense of pressure building throughout the day
- The mental load that never quite switches off
At some point, you may have wondered:
Is something wrong with me?
There isn’t.
What you are experiencing is something very human.
But what if anxiety is not the problem?
What if it is the message?

The Child Who Just Wants to Be Heard
Imagine a child trying to get their parent’s attention.
At first, they ask gently.
“Mum…”
No response.
They ask again.
“Mum…”
Still nothing.
They repeat themselves. Louder this time.
And if they continue to be ignored?
They escalate.
Until eventually, they are no longer asking.
They are shouting. Crying. Having a full meltdown.
Not because they are “difficult”.
Because they were not heard.
Your Anxiety Works in Exactly the Same Way
At first, it whispers:
- A slight discomfort
- A small doubt
- A gentle sense that something is not quite right
Ignore it, and it repeats.
Ignore it again, and it becomes louder:
- Faster breathing
- Tightness in your chest
- A growing sense of unease
Keep ignoring it…
And eventually, it will demand to be heard.
Burnout.
Breakdown.
Walking away from work you once loved.
Symptom Relief Is Not the Same as Solving the Problem
Think about headaches.
Many people take pain relief. And sometimes that is appropriate.
But often, the headache is not the problem.
It is the signal.
You are not deficient in paracetamol.
You may be:
- Dehydrated
- Overstimulated
- Tired
- Holding tension
For years, I thought I had a “three o’clock headache”.
Every day, like clockwork.
Until I realised something important.
The headache had been there all along.
It simply became unbearable at 3pm.
The real issue?
TMJD.
My body had been telling me, repeatedly.
I just had not been listening.
Once I understood the message and addressed the cause, the headaches disappeared.
I have not needed paracetamol in over 20 years.
Anxiety That Follows You Like a Shadow
Unless the message within your anxiety is heard and the underlying trigger resolved, it does not disappear.
It follows you.
Like a shadow.
Showing up again and again:
- With different patients
- In different conversations
- On different days
The only way to truly overcome it is to turn towards it.
To look it in the eye.
To listen carefully.
To understand what it is asking of you.
Techniques such as:
- Breathing exercises
- Yoga
- Grounding practices like see–hear–touch–taste–feel
can be incredibly helpful.
They calm the immediate response.
They help break the habitual cycle.
But they are not the cure.
They are symptomatic relief.
The cause must still be addressed.
In the same way that antibiotics may temporarily reduce the symptoms of an apical infection, they do not remove the source.
In dentistry, lasting resolution comes from definitive treatment:
- Root canal therapy
- Extraction
Anxiety is no different.
Until the cause is understood and resolved, it will continue to return.
So What Is Your Anxiety Trying to Tell You?
In dentistry and clinical environments, anxiety often shows up around:
- Patient conversations
- Providing specific treatments
- Treatment planning
- Fees and value
- Fear of complaints
- Time pressure
- “Difficult” conversations
- Uncertainty about expectations
Many people respond to the anxiety by:
- Ignoring the feeling
- Pushing through
- Taking time off
- Relying on medication
- Repeatedly moving practices
- Leaving the profession
But there is another way.

Your Inner Guidance Is Not Your Enemy
What if your anxiety is not something to silence…
But something to understand?
Your inner wisdom is always working for you.
It is trying to protect you. Guide you. Support you.
But if you do not understand the message, it can feel overwhelming.
Over 25 years of working with dental professionals, one thing has been consistent:
There is always a positive intention behind the anxiety.
Common messages include:
- You are not yet confident in this conversation
- You need a clearer structure or process
- You have not fully understood what the patient wants
- You are moving too quickly without alignment
- You are unsure how to communicate value clearly
These are not criticisms.
They are guidance.
When You Listen, Everything Changes
When you learn to:
- Recognise the signal
- Understand the message
- Develop the skill that is missing
Something shifts.
The fear reduces.
The clarity increases.
The confidence returns.
And most importantly…
You begin to trust yourself again.

You Do Not Need to Run Away From Anxiety
You do not need to suppress it.
You do not need to escape it.
You need to listen to it.
Because within it is the exact direction you need.

Final Thought
The next time you feel anxiety…
Do not ask,
“What is wrong with me?”
Ask instead:
“What is this trying to tell me?”
Because the answer to that question may change everything.
Anxiety is your best friend who has been mis-understood.
