When Talking Isn’t Communicating
How being a good dentist may be stopping you becoming a great one
Most clinicians spend their entire day talking.
Explaining diagnoses.
Discussing treatment options.
Advising patients what is best for them.
Yet many still leave work feeling frustrated.
Because communication is not measured by what you say.
It is measured by what the patient understands… and how they feel.
A patient who nods politely but does nothing has not understood.
A patient who delays treatment has not felt safe.
A patient who says “I’ll think about it” is rarely thinking about it.
They are trying to escape confusion.
Good dentistry alone does not create action.
Understanding does.
This is where good becomes the enemy of great.
Three questions you may recognise
Take a moment and notice your internal response.
Are you worried about the changes coming to the NHS this April?
Is your appointment book becoming gappy and income dropping?
Are you giving patients choices, only for them to choose nothing?
Many clinicians also notice something else:
You have invested heavily in clinical education…
yet somehow still feel stuck.
If any of those felt uncomfortably familiar, the problem is rarely your clinical ability that Is the cause, It Is possibly or event probably your communication – you’re ability to ask questions that provide understanding and drive decision making
Imagine a different day
Picture finishing work calm rather than drained.
You are providing the dentistry you enjoy.
Patients accept care because they want it.
Your diary fills predictably.
You earn appropriately for your skill.
Pause for a second and notice how that feels.
This is not created by persuading patients.
It is created by helping them understand.

The bridge between where you are and where you want to be
There are only three steps:
- Building trust and safety
- Helping patients choose, not convincing them
- Making success reproducible
Many clinicians unknowingly repeat the same conversations while hoping for a different outcome.
If the outcome needs to change, the communication must change.

A practical principle you can use immediately: PEA
To improve connection and acceptance, develop your PEA.
P — Persona
Be yourself.
Patients detect scripts instantly. Authenticity creates safety faster than perfect wording ever will.
Your individuality, integrity and honesty matter more than memorised phrases.
E — Effectiveness
Trust grows when promises are kept.
Start on time.
Send plans when you said you would.
Deliver outcomes when predicted.
Every kept promise strengthens confidence.
Every broken promise weakens it.
A — Acceptance
Meet patients in their world, not yours.
Listen without correcting.
Understand before advising.
See the human, not just the dentition.
When patients feel understood, decisions become easy.
What happens when PEA improves
Trust increases.
Connection strengthens.
Acceptance rises.
You move from single-tooth dentistry to comprehensive care because patients now understand value.
Not because you persuaded them.
Because they chose.
Why communication changes careers
For over two decades clinicians have discovered that communication — not technique — was the missing link.
When understanding improves:
- conversations become confident
- treatment planning becomes clear
- complaints reduce dramatically
- patients recommend you
- dentistry becomes enjoyable again
Many nurses have even stepped into patient care coordinator roles because structured communication empowers the entire team.
Learning without discomfort
Education often feels difficult: time away from practice, lost income, unfamiliar rooms full of strangers.
A different approach works better.
Relaxed venues.
Supportive groups.
Bring your nurse so change actually happens in practice.
Because dentistry improves fastest when the whole clinical pair learns together.

Moving from good to great
Great dentistry is not just technical excellence.
It is predictable understanding.
Once patients feel safe, understand their situation and know how to decide, acceptance follows naturally.
The aim is not better explanations.
It is better conversations.
And that is what changes confidence, income and enjoyment simultaneously.
