If youâve ever watched a David Attenborough documentary, youâll have seen how animals react under threatâthey freeze, flee, fight, or fold. These are natural, biological stress responses hardwired into every mammal, including us. While you may not be facing a lion or fleeing from danger, life in the 21st century offers its own threatsâconflict at work, financial uncertainty, relationship breakdown, or simply too much to do and not enough time or support.
As human beings, we experience the same physiological response. But instead of calling it what it isâa natural response to a perceived threatâwe label it with terms like anxiety, panic attacks, or burnout. As a therapeutic coach, I prefer to take a different approach. I call it being in an unresourceful state or more specifically, being in CRASH.

What is the CRASH State?
CRASH is an acronym that describes the typical characteristics of a person who is stuck in a stress response and unable to be their best self. It stands for:
C â Contracted
- You feel physically tight, your breathing is shallow, and you may close yourself off from others.
- Your body feels as though it’s pulling inward, protecting itself.
R â Rigid
- Your thinking becomes black-and-white.
- You’re locked into one way of viewing things, even if itâs not helping.
A â Analyse (to paralysis)
- You overthink everything, get stuck in the detail, and may feel helpless, hopeless or worthless.
- Thereâs a sense of being overwhelmed by too many thoughts and not enough clarity.
S â Separate
- You feel disconnected from othersâemotionally, socially, even spiritually.
- You might want to leave your job, your relationship, or just run away from it all.
H â Hurt (and Hatred)
- Deep emotional pain is often at the root of CRASH.
- It can turn outward as anger or hatredâtowards others, situations, or even yourself.
When you’re in a CRASH state, youâre more likely to misbehave, miscommunicate, and make mistakesâwhich only deepens the cycle. Itâs exhausting. And itâs isolating. But you are not alone.

Recognising Yourself in CRASH is the First Step
You might be reading this and thinking, âThatâs me.â Youâre not imagining it. And itâs not weakness. Itâs a natural biological reaction to a world that often asks too much and gives too little in return.
The good news? You can shift out of CRASH and back into being the confident, calm, capable version of yourself. It begins with becoming resourcedâphysically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

You Are Not BrokenâYou’re Just in CRASH
I know this territory personally. Iâve been in that dark, foggy placeâangry, anxious, over-stimulated by caffeine and adrenaline, desperately trying to keep going. One day I realised the things I was doing to cope werenât helpingâthey were making things worse. In my CRASH state I hurt people, I hurt myself, the situation was unsustainable.
I decided to find a new way. Today, I still have challenging days, but Iâm no longer stuck. And you donât have to be either.
This is What Coaching Can Do
As a therapeutic coach, I work with clients who want to move from CRASH to confident. Itâs not about talking endlessly or digging through your past without purpose. Itâs a practical, fast, drug-free solution to help you regain your clarity, energy, and joy.
We work together to find your keys to resourcefulnessâthe ones that are unique to you and that will unlock your path forward.

CRASH in the Workplace: Why Daily Check-ins Matter
If youâre a leader, practice owner, or part of a dental team, start your daily huddles with a simple question:
âHow resourced are you feeling today?â
Itâs a powerful way to identify who might be in CRASH before a stressful patient, a medical emergency, or a burst pipe tests your teamâs resilience.
You canât fix others, but you can support themâa kind word, a warm cuppa, a gentle signpost to someone who can help.
Just remember: some people will resist change, even if they’re suffering. When the time is right, they will choose to move from CRASH to confident.
When Youâre Sick of Being SickâŠ
You are not broken, you probably don’t have imposter syndome, the likelyhood is you are under resourced.
âŠis when everything can begin to change. If you’re ready to make a shift and want guidance from someone whoâs walked the path, Iâd love to help.
